Rev. Peter J. Norris BA, BTheol, DipGrad (Otago), DipTchg (CTC), MA, PhD (Notre Dame)
Dr. Norris has been Master of the College since 1989. His first degrees were in History and Christian Thought and History at the University of Otago. An MA in the History of Christianity was followed by a PhD in Early Modern European History at the University of Notre Dame. The PhD dissertation was on "Robert Parsons and the Counter-Reformation in England". A Diploma in Teaching at Christchurch Teachers College was followed by a Graduate Diploma in Information Science at the University of Otago.
Dr. Norris has taught history in Freshman Seminars at the University of Notre Dame. He has taught church history at Christchurch Teachers College and Knox Theological Hall (within the faculty of theology, University of Otago). He has taught Medical Ethics to Graduate Nurses at Christchurch Polytechnic and has lectured at Holy Cross College, Mosgiel in Ecumenical Theology, Christian Worship and the RCIA. He has taught within the History Department and the Theology Department at the University of Otago.
He is a former President of the University of Otago Graduates' Association and is a former Executive Board member of the Otago-Southland Ecumenical Chaplaincy Trust. He is a former Board Member for Holy Cross College Spirituality and Conference Centre and is the Convenor of the College Liaison Committee for the University of Otago. He assists at Holy Name parish in Dunedin. He is a Member of the Interview panel for the Further Categories Section for Otago Medical School and he is a Member of the University Human Ethics Committee. He is also a Member of the Roman Catholic Diocesan Administration Board.
Dr Norris is the author of Southernmost Seminary: The Story of Holy Cross College, Mosgiel (1900-97) (Auckland 1999), which is the history of the National Seminary. Dr Norris was the preacher at the Episcopal Ordination of his close friend, the Rt Rev Philip Richardson, the Anglican Bishop in Taranaki. This is believed to be the first Anglican ordination since the Reformation with a Catholic priest as preacher.
Dr. Norris retains a strong interest in Church history and is inordinately proud of the grounds and buildings of Saint Margaret's College. He was the University of Otago Graduation Speaker in August 1999 and is an occasional speaker for various groups.

Deputy Master
Jan Burton
Jan Burton started as Deputy Master in 2006 and moved into a new apartment at the College in 2007. She is married to Dr Jeremy Burton (a Microbiologist) and they have two children, a two year old daughter, Isabelle, and a six year old son, Maxwell who in turn has two cats (Poppy and Charlie). Jan was a resident of the College from 1991 – 1993 and kept a close association since then. In recognition of her links and help to the College Jan was named a Fellow of the College in 2005. Jan has worked in management in New Zealand and in Canada before returning to the College.
